Former Nigerian international Odion Ighalo has endorsed Victor Osimhen as the ideal candidate to lead the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. This follows William Troost-Ekong’s retirement from international football.
With experienced players like Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Chidozie Awaziem available, many expected Ndidi to inherit the armband. Ighalo, however, believes Osimhen possesses unique leadership qualities that make him the better choice.
In an interview with veteran journalist Colin Udoh, the ex-Manchester United striker clarified his stance. “My preference isn’t about seniority,” Ighalo stated. “Players like Simon, Ndidi, Iwobi, and Awaziem have more experience.”
Ighalo emphasized that true leadership extends beyond tenure. He described Osimhen as outspoken and fearless. The Napoli striker demands accountability both on and off the pitch. These traits are crucial for a Super Eagles captain.
Leadership Styles Compared
Ighalo contrasted Osimhen’s approach with Ndidi’s reserved nature. “Ndidi isn’t the vocal type,” he explained. “Osimhen speaks for the team, motivates players, and confronts challenges head-on.”
“Osimhen energizes the squad. You see him encouraging teammates during matches. He’ll fight for the players and address issues directly with officials.”
The Captain’s Burden
Ighalo highlighted the pressures of captaining Nigeria. “It’s a difficult role,” he noted. “The captain bridges the gap between players and the Nigeria Football Federation.”
“Player demands fall on the captain’s shoulders. The NFF holds you accountable for every statement made publicly.”
Osimhen’s status as Nigeria’s star player strengthens his position according to Ighalo. “His performance gives him authority. When you excel, you earn the right to demand higher standards.”
“The NFF will listen to Osimhen. They can’t dismiss Africa’s top talent. His achievements command respect.”
Ighalo also praised Osimhen’s work ethic. “His relentless effort sets the standard. When teammates see him fighting on the pitch, they’re inspired to match his intensity.”
Nigeria will compete in Group C against Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania at AFCON 2025. The three-time champions seek redemption after missing World Cup qualification.
