Nigeria’s former Head of State, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has issued a direct challenge. He spoke to Kabiru Turaki, the new factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). IBB urged Turaki to genuinely rebuild the party. He also advised correcting past missteps. This strategic preparation is vital as the 2027 general elections draw near.
Babangida delivered this message during a courtesy visit. Turaki and selected members of the PDP National Working Committee met him. The meeting took place at IBB’s Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.
Focus on Party Renewal and National Stability
Reports indicate the discussion centered on key themes. These included party renewal, national stability, and strengthening political structures nationwide. IBB commended the PDP leadership. He noted their solidarity with the government and people of Niger State. This was during what he described as a very difficult period for them.
The former military ruler emphasized the PDP’s enduring strength. He called it “the most structurally grounded political organisation in Nigeria.” Babangida recalled his own attempt to establish a two-party system. He noted this experiment faced resistance from the political class then.
IBB offered specific guidance to Chairman Turaki. He advised prioritizing tact, broad consultation, and inclusive leadership. These are essential as Turaki begins repositioning the party. “You admitted the party made mistakes,” IBB stated. “Machinery is already in motion to correct them.”
He continued, “I urge you to use tact. Seek people’s opinions. Work towards building a peaceful and progressive party. You have the capacity to do it, and I wish you well.”
Highlighting Deep-Rooted Party Influence
Babangida shared an anecdote to illustrate political parties’ lasting influence. He recounted a military administrator he appointed in Niger State. This administrator met a resident who remained loyal to President Shehu Shagari. The resident also supported the then-ruling NPN. This was despite a military government being in power.
This incident, IBB explained, showed how deeply party structures are embedded. They exist within community consciousness across Nigeria.
Turaki Pledges Commitment to Party Reset
In his response, Chairman Turaki expressed gratitude. He thanked the former Head of State for his consistent guidance. Turaki affirmed the PDP would continue to learn from IBB’s experience. This includes his historical understanding of Nigeria’s political evolution.
“We are committed to resetting this party,” Turaki declared. “We will strengthen its organs. We aim to restore its winning spirit ahead of 2027.”
Turaki also clarified the delegation’s visit. Initially, they planned a special appreciation call. However, recent abductions in Niger State prompted a combined visit. It became both a courtesy call and a condolence visit.
