A recent video shows an emotional meeting. It features Imam Abdullahi Abubakar. This Muslim cleric bravely protected over 280 Christians. He sheltered them during a 2018 Plateau State attack.
His courageous actions gained widespread recognition. The U.S. Mission in Nigeria honored him. The Christian Association of Nigeria also presented him an award.
The Violent Incident in Yelwa Gindi Awati
In June 2018, armed assailants attacked Yelwa Gindi Awati. This community lies in Plateau State’s Barkin Ladi area.
These alleged bandits targeted Christian residents.
The content creator, known as The African Hawk, shared details of his visit:
“This is Imam Abubakar. He rescued over 300 Christians. This happened during a bandit attack on his village.”
He further stated, “I met the Imam during my visit. He protected these Christians from the bandit assault.”
Imam Abdullahi’s Act of Protection
The visitor reported Imam Abdullahi offered refuge. He sheltered Christian residents in his mosque. He also opened his personal home.
“Imam Abubakar brought the Birom Christians into the mosque. He kept them safe within its walls. Bandits later reached the mosque. He then prevented their entry. They could not harm those seeking sanctuary,” the visitor recounted.
Sadly, not all individuals reached safety.
“Some Birom people could not reach the mosque. Bandits intercepted them. Over 80 lives were lost. However, the Imam saved 300 others. He housed them in the mosque and his home.”
Facing Down the Assailants
The content creator described the attackers’ demands. They insisted the Christians be surrendered.
“The Hausa-speaking bandits demanded the Imam reveal the hiding Christians. They had prior intelligence. They also approached his house. They threatened to force entry. Imam Abubakar courageously prostrated himself. He told them to kill him first. Only then could they harm the Birom Christians inside,” the account detailed.
“The Imam, a Fulani man, sacrificed immensely. He protected over 300 Christians. This act highlights humanity’s presence. It exists even amid religious strife,” he concluded.
Promoting Interfaith Harmony
Reflecting on this event, the content creator stated:
“Religious and communal conflicts persist. Yet, good Christians and Muslims still exist. Most Nigerians are inherently good,” he affirmed.

Imam Abdullahi Abubakar’s bravery received widespread acclaim. He earned numerous local and international awards.
