Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane believes individual goal-scoring may not be enough. He suggests it won’t secure football’s most coveted individual award, the Ballon d’Or.
Speaking with the UK Mirror, the England captain emphasized the critical role of winning major team trophies. He specifically mentioned the Champions League and the World Cup.
“I could score 100 goals this season,” Kane stated. “But if I don’t win the Champions League or the World Cup, I likely won’t win the Ballon d’Or.” He added, “It’s the same for Haaland and any other player. You simply must be winning those major trophies.”
Kane’s Impressive Form
The 32-year-old striker is currently enjoying one of the best starts to a season in his career. Kane has already netted 13 goals in the Bundesliga and five in the Champions League. This impressive tally makes him one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards.
Despite his outstanding personal performance, Kane understands that team trophies are crucial for individual accolades. Last season, he scored 44 goals in 45 games for Bayern Munich. He also guided England to the Euro 2024 final. Yet, he only finished 13th in the Ballon d’Or voting.
Eyes on Major Trophies
Looking to the future, Kane remains optimistic. He is confident about Bayern Munich’s prospects in Europe. He also sees strong chances for England at the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
“The season is going well for Bayern Munich as a team. We seem to be in great shape,” he stated. “We look like strong favourites for the Champions League, certainly. It’s the same with England. I believe we will enter the tournament as one of the top contenders.”
Winning the World Cup next summer could indeed be Kane’s pathway to the Ballon d’Or. This mirrors how City’s Rodri reportedly clinched the award in 2024 after Spain’s Euro victory. A Champions League triumph would also significantly boost his chances. This is, of course, provided he maintains his prolific goal-scoring form.
