Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has firmly dismissed speculation about his potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking in Abuja during Wednesday’s public presentation of ‘Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration,’ authored by former Minister Lai Mohammed, Makinde reaffirmed his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor directly addressed recent rumours amid opposition governors joining APC. “I am not APC, and I am not about to become APC,” Makinde stated. He emphasized Nigeria’s progress requires sincere collaboration across political divides.
Makinde attributed Nigeria’s deepening divisions to elite ambitions rather than citizens’ will. Ordinary Nigerians desire unity and coexistence, he noted. Yet politicians manipulate religious, ethnic, and regional lines for personal gain.
The governor cautioned against “winner-takes-all” political mentalities. He argued this approach fuels exclusion and weakens national cohesion. Nigeria needs elite consensus focused on governance improvements, Makinde stressed. Addressing contemporary challenges should replace recycling old divisions.
Citing personal experience, Makinde noted political success hinges on divine timing. He recalled how prominent figures, including himself and former President Buhari, faced electoral losses before eventual success years later.
Makinde concluded by urging deliberate efforts to create political arrangements. These should prioritize fairness, inclusion, and national stability. The governor’s statements come as Nigeria navigates complex political realignments ahead of 2027 elections.
