Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has explicitly stated he will not compel Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo to follow his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Governor Diri formally joined the APC on November 3 after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15. He emphasized preferring dialogue over political pressure.
Respect Over Coercion
Addressing speculation during Wednesday’s State Executive Council meeting in Yenagoa, Diri clarified his stance. “I won’t force people to join APC,” he stated. “I appeal to them to see reason. I might have power today, not tomorrow.” The governor acknowledged challenges in having leaders from opposing parties. Yet, he confirmed ongoing productive discussions with his deputy.
“Having governor and deputy in different parties is difficult,” Diri noted. “But we continue talking. We might unite in the same party soon.”
Lawsuit Withdrawn Through Dialogue
Governor Diri revealed that Ewhrudjakpo’s lawsuit against impeachment proceedings has been dropped. The deputy had filed it at Abuja’s Federal High Court. This followed his refusal to defect with Diri. The resolution emerged from private talks between both leaders. Diri stressed prioritizing Bayelsa’s peace and stability above political friction.
“We reject violence in Bayelsa,” he declared. “We are brothers. Politics should develop our state, not breed conflict.”
Dismissing Security Concerns
The governor also addressed circulating reports about armed groups entering Bayelsa. He dismissed these claims as fake news. Diri urged residents to remain calm. He confirmed security agencies were alerted and prepared.
“Bayelsa remains highly secure,” Diri assured. “Report security issues properly. Avoid spreading falsehoods on social media.”
Recognition for Governance
During the council meeting, Health Commissioner Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe presented Diri with an award. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum recognized Bayelsa as “Best State in Health Insurance Service Delivery.” Sports Commissioner Dr. Daniel Igali also honored the governor. The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria awarded him for “Outstanding Support to SWAN and Sports Development.”
