Fuji music icon Abass Akande Obesere faced a violent attack on Friday. Suspected thugs assaulted him at a burial ceremony. The incident occurred in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Bosede Akinyemi, a witness, confirmed the incident on Saturday. She spoke to The Nation. Akinyemi reported that hoodlums arrived suddenly. They caused widespread chaos. Many guests fled for their safety.
“I attended the party on Friday,” Akinyemi stated. “It was a truly shameful act. A group of boys, known as local thugs, created serious trouble. They specifically attacked Obesere and his band. This happened while the band entertained guests.”
She added that several band members were assaulted. Expensive musical equipment also suffered significant vandalism.
“They attacked some of Obesere’s crew members,” Akinyemi recounted. “His equipment was completely destroyed. I quickly grabbed my shoes and ran from the scene. I also heard one band member was stabbed. This happened while trying to fend off the attackers.”
LGA Chairman Condemns Attack
Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin reacted to the incident. He is the Chairman of Okitipupa LGA. Ogunsakin called the attack “unfortunate and unacceptable.” He stressed that such behavior does not reflect the values of the Ikale people.
“I received news of the mistreatment of Abass Akande Obesere and his team,” he stated. “It filled me with deep disappointment and distaste. This incident is totally unacceptable. It does not reflect the values we uphold as a people.”
Ogunsakin affirmed his administration’s stance. They will not tolerate acts threatening public harmony. Such actions also tarnish the local government’s image. He assured that measures would prevent similar future incidents.
“I want to assure the public,” he continued. “Necessary steps will be taken to address this matter. We will prevent future occurrences. This applies to artists, celebrities, entertainers, or any individual. It covers both visitors and residents in our local government.”
“I will personally contact Obesere and his team,” Ogunsakin concluded. “I will convey our deep regrets. We are investigating the matter thoroughly. This will ensure such an incident never repeats itself.”
