Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar served in the Nigerian Army. He later became the 20th Sultan of Sokoto in 2006. This made him a key spiritual leader for Nigerian Muslims.
Early Life and Academic Path
Abubakar was born in Sokoto on August 24, 1956. He is the son of the late Sultan Siddiq Abubakar Illo.
He attended Sultan’s Ward Primary School. Later, he studied at Barewa College in Zaria. This college is one of Nigeria’s most respected institutions.
His journey continued at the Nigerian Defense Academy. There, he prepared for a notable military career.
A Prominent Military Career
Muhammadu Abubakar served over three decades in the Nigerian Army. He achieved the rank of Brigadier General.
He commanded peacekeeping forces in Chad. He also led the 231 Tank Battalion in Sierra Leone. These were ECOMOG operations.
From 2003 to 2006, he was Nigeria’s Defense Attaché. He held this post in Pakistan.
Ascension to the Sultanate
Abubakar’s elder brother passed away. He then retired from the military. He took on the role of Sultan of Sokoto. His official enthronement occurred on November 2, 2006.
Leadership in Islamic Matters
As Sultan, Abubakar heads the Qadiriyya Sufi order. He also serves as President-General. This is for the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
