Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has described Victor Osimhen as a footballer operating “on another level,” predicting defenders will fear marking Nigeria’s star striker at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Both players featured in Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON final defeat against Ivory Coast. They’re set to lead Nigeria’s redemption campaign next year. Despite scoring just once in that tournament, Osimhen has climbed to second on Nigeria’s all-time goalscoring list.
The Napoli forward has netted 31 goals in 45 international appearances. He trails only legendary striker Rashidi Yekini in Nigeria’s record books.
“He’s such an amazing player,” Onyeka told BBC Sport Africa. “Opponents will be scared of him. Victor fights for every ball and operates on another level.”
Nigeria struggled without Osimhen during World Cup qualifiers, earning just four points from five matches. The team also lost momentum against DR Congo when Osimhen exited at halftime.
“His absence changed the game,” Onyeka admitted. “Even Congo players acknowledged their defenders could relax after he left.”
While vital for Nigeria, Onyeka’s club career presents challenges. The Brentford midfielder hasn’t started a Premier League match this season. He spent last year on loan at German club Augsburg.
During his Bundesliga spell, Onyeka focused on mental preparation techniques. “I practice mindfulness daily to stay calm,” he revealed. “I focus on breathing before games to feel settled.”
Though scoreless for Augsburg, Onyeka netted crucial goals for Nigeria. His 91st-minute winner against Benin secured a World Cup play-off spot. He also scored against DR Congo.
“Adding goals to my game is important,” Onyeka stated. “Our World Cup qualification failure motivates us. We have the talent to win AFCON and bring the trophy home.”
