Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has dismissed speculation about leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He described the defection rumors as the work of political “mischief makers” seeking to destabilize the opposition party.
Expressing strong confidence in PDP’s future, Ortom predicted the party would emerge stronger before the 2027 elections. He urged stakeholders to remain steadfast in rebuilding Benue’s PDP structure. Though not contesting any position himself, Ortom pledged full backing for all party candidates.
The former governor advised PDP aspirants to conduct broad consultations despite recent defections to the ruling party. Ortom stated clearly: “I’m not planning to leave PDP. I remain loyal. With commitment and dedication, we shall reclaim Benue in 2027.”
Ortom Criticizes Successor Over Financial Transparency
Separately, Ortom questioned Governor Hyacinth Alia’s financial management. He accused his successor of personal attacks instead of explaining Benue’s finances. This includes clarifying details of a recently approved ₦100 billion loan.
Ortom’s spokesperson noted the administration avoided addressing PDP’s legitimate loan concerns. Instead, it allegedly launched attacks against the former governor. Questions were raised about revenue management since May 2023.
The criticism specifically referenced contract awards reportedly made without due process. Allegations include bypassing budgetary provisions in administrative decisions.
