Former Ghana coach Claude Le Roy has voiced concerns about Ademola Lookman’s performance for the Nigerian national team. He suggests the forward struggles to match his club form when playing for the Super Eagles.
Le Roy’s Assessment of Lookman’s Form
Speaking on Canal +, Le Roy stated, “Lookman, when he returns to the Nigeria national team, is not quite the same player anymore.”
However, Le Roy acknowledged Lookman’s recent resurgence at Atalanta. The winger has clearly started finding his rhythm again with his club. He further commented, “We get the impression that in his last few club matches, he is becoming more comfortable. We are seeing him make an impact again in certain plays. He is finding things a little easier.”
Super Eagles: Strong AFCON Contenders
Despite his reservations about Lookman’s recent Super Eagles displays, Le Roy remains confident. He believes Nigeria will be a major force at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. In his opinion, only one team enters the tournament with stronger credentials.
Le Roy affirmed, “Yes, Nigeria remains one of the favourites for the AFCON, second only to Morocco.”
Lookman’s Importance to Nigeria
Lookman, aged 28, has indeed shown glimpses of his exciting form. This talent once marked him as one of Africa’s most promising forwards. His displays in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League have recently improved. This fuels hopes he can transfer this progress to the national team.
The Super Eagles forward last scored for Nigeria on September 7, 2024. He netted a brace in a 3-0 victory against the Benin Republic. This happened during the AFCON qualifiers. Those goals highlighted his critical role in the team’s attack. He remains central to Nigeria’s plans for the upcoming competition.
