An unnamed former England and Premier League footballer has been arrested at Stansted Airport. The arrest followed an accusation of attempted rape by his ex-partner.
Border Force officers stopped the retired player on Sunday night. He was passing through passport control for a budget flight. Checks revealed he was wanted in connection with a non-recent allegation. This claim is linked to his previous relationship.
A source spoke to The Sun. They stated, “He was walking through passport control when Border Force discreetly pulled him aside. There was clearly an issue, and he was led away.”
Essex Police were notified. Officers then travelled to the airport. The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was taken into custody. He was later moved to a nearby police station.
At the station, officers took his fingerprints, DNA, and photograph. He was then placed in a cell. He awaited legal representation and questioning there.
The arrest has surprised many familiar with the case. The ex-footballer has been seen at several public events recently. Another source added, “It’s bizarre that he was arrested at the airport when he has been quite visible in public recently.”
The complaint was filed several weeks ago. This led to a police investigation. Reports indicate that specialist officers, trained in sexual offences, interviewed the woman involved. She has also been offered counselling and support.
After several hours of questioning, the former Premier League star was released on bail. Detectives will continue to examine the allegation.
Essex Police issued a statement. It confirmed, “A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape. He has been bailed to a date in late February 2026 as we continue our inquiries.”
