FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has made a strong pledge. He vows to prevent the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from collapsing. He promised to do everything possible to ensure its survival.
Wike added that he and other PDP founding members will protect the party. They will not allow new members, who joined from other political parties, to destroy it.
He accused a rival faction of conducting an “illegal convention.” This action, he stated, violated court judgments. Wike insisted the PDP must respect judicial processes. Only then, he argued, can it regain public trust.
Wike questioned their actions directly. “You sued INEC at a State High Court,” he stated. “You demanded a convention and secured an ex-parte order. This order aimed to override Federal High Court judgments.” He continued, “How can you disobey two final judgments? Yet, you still claim leadership.”
He added, “You held the convention without obeying the court.” “Now, you are asking a Federal High Court for recognition.” “If INEC already recognizes you,” Wike asked, “why are you going to court?”
Wike also accused the opposing faction of using propaganda. He warned against allowing selfish interests. Such interests, he said, could destroy the political platform. The PDP has existed since 1998.
“Our party must not be allowed to die,” Wike declared. “Leadership demands commitment and honesty, not propaganda.” He concluded, “If we disrespect our own laws, how can we earn respect from Nigerians?”
The FCT Minister urged all party faithful. They should support lawful leadership. He called for unity to rebuild the PDP. This must align with democratic principles and judicial integrity.
Caretaker Committee Urged for PDP’s Future
Meanwhile, the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) faced a crucial appeal. It was urged to form a Caretaker Committee. This committee would guide the party. The current National Working Committee’s tenure expires soon.
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa made this call. He is the factional Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman. Ohuabunwa spoke at the 104th NEC meeting on Sunday.
The BoT also noted ongoing efforts. Caretaker leadership is being set up in specific states and zones. These include Anambra and the South-East. Congresses could not be held there previously. Such efforts are crucial, the BoT stated. They prevent leadership gaps and improve party organization.
