Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Aviation Minister, strongly defended Bello Matawalle. Matawalle serves as the Minister of State for Defence. Calls for his resignation grew due to ongoing insecurity in Nigeria.
On Thursday, Fani-Kayode posted on X (formerly Twitter). He called the media campaign against Matawalle “shameless and nauseating.” He highlighted the minister’s strong loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Matawalle also shows unwavering dedication to fighting terrorism.
Strong Defense Amidst Criticism
Fani-Kayode wrote on his platform. He expressed that the “vicious media campaign” against Matawalle felt “shameless and nauseating.” He asserted Matawalle’s exceptional loyalty to President Tinubu. Matawalle also showed significant commitment to counter-terrorism efforts. This commitment, Fani-Kayode noted, surpasses most others since the minister assumed his role.
Fani-Kayode stressed Matawalle’s crucial role in Nigeria’s anti-terrorism efforts. National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu also worked alongside him. He added that the combined efforts of Matawalle and Ribadu yielded significant results. They accounted for more terrorist neutralizations in two years. This exceeded the number from the preceding eight years. He raised concerns. These successes, he noted, received insufficient public attention.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Outlook
Fani-Kayode further commended General Christopher Musa’s recent appointment. Musa, an efficient former Chief of Defence Staff, became the Minister of Defence. This collaboration promises a stronger national security framework. Musa, Ribadu, Matawalle, and new Service Chiefs will work together.
Personal Support and Public Pressure
The former minister urged Matawalle to maintain his focus. This is despite ongoing attempts to discredit him. Fani-Kayode encouraged his “friend and brother” Matawalle. He advised him to “continue his good work” and disregard negative influences.
Fani-Kayode characterized Matawalle as a “ruthless and courageous fighter.” He said Matawalle shows no quarter to adversaries. These qualities, he noted, solidified their 15-year close bond. He ended his message with encouragement and solidarity. He urged Matawalle to continue defending the nation. Fani-Kayode assured him of support. He added that divine assistance was also with him.
Demands for Matawalle’s resignation grew stronger recently. Public frustration fuels these calls. The ongoing attacks by bandits and insurgents nationwide are the reason. Despite such pressure, his supporters, including Fani-Kayode, maintain a different view. They argue Matawalle’s strategic contributions merit recognition. His commitment to security reforms should not face undermining.
