Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has raised concerns about goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s attitude, suggesting the Chippa United player is showing troubling signs of overconfidence. Sodje emphasized the potential consequences for Nigeria’s national team if the issue remains unaddressed.
Speaking on Brila FM’s “No Holds Barred” with Ifeanyi Udeze, Sodje warned that Nwabali’s recent conduct threatens his position as first-choice goalkeeper. The comments come amid reports that head coach Eric Chelle is evaluating alternative goalkeeping options before next month’s critical World Cup qualifiers.
Sodje Distinguishes Confidence from Problem Attitude
“There’s a clear difference between healthy confidence and problematic behavior,” Sodje stated. “With players like Stanley, we must examine how they play, speak, and carry themselves on and off the pitch.”
The ex-defender urged team management to take preventive action. “If the coach believes Stanley might cost us matches, changes must happen immediately. Waiting could prove disastrous for our qualification hopes,” he insisted.
Sodje further recommended psychological intervention. “His recent patterns suggest he’s heading toward avoidable mistakes. This is precisely when professional psychological support becomes essential,” the former player advised.
Nwabali faces mounting criticism despite his impressive performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Recent weeks have seen scrutiny over his form for both club and country.
The goalkeeper was recently filmed arguing with teammates during halftime in Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Benin Republic. This incident has intensified discussions about his team dynamics.
