Former Ghana coach Claude Le Roy has expressed reservations about Ademola Lookman’s contributions to the Nigeria national team. He believes the forward struggles to replicate his impressive club form when on international duty.
Speaking on Canal +, Le Roy stated, “Lookman, when he comes back to the Nigeria national team, is not quite the same player anymore.”

Lookman’s Club Resurgence Noted
Le Roy did acknowledge Lookman’s recent recovery at Atalanta. The player has started to find his rhythm again with his club side.
“We get the impression that in the last few matches with his club, he is starting to get a little bit comfortable,” Le Roy added. “We are starting to see him again in certain plays. He is finding life a little easier.”
Super Eagles Remain AFCON Favorites
Despite his concerns about Lookman’s recent displays for Nigeria, Le Roy remains confident in the Super Eagles. He sees them as a dominant force for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
In Le Roy’s view, only one team enters the tournament with stronger credentials. “So yes Nigeria remains one of the favorites for the Afcon after Morocco,” he affirmed.
Lookman, aged 28, has demonstrated flashes of the brilliance that made him a highly-rated African forward. His performances in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League have improved recently.
This resurgence at club level fuels hopes that he can translate his progress into the national team setup.
Last Goal for Nigeria
The Super Eagles forward last found the net for Nigeria on September 7, 2024. He scored a brace in a convincing 3-0 victory against the Benin Republic.
That match was part of the AFCON qualifiers. His goals then underscored his significance in the attack.
He continues to be a central figure in Nigeria’s plans for the upcoming competition.
