Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has committed to securing Nigeria’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging his squad to approach the crucial playoffs with a “warrior” mentality. The Franco-Malian tactician made this declaration during an interview with Nigerian football icon Segun Odegbami on Eagle7 FM’s “90 Minutes with Mathematical” program.
Chelle expressed appreciation for the overwhelming support from Nigerian fans since his appointment. “Thanks to the fans. Thanks to Nigeria. I’m thrilled to have restored their smiles,” Chelle stated. He credited supporters for fueling the team’s 4-0 victory over Benin Republic and appealed for continued backing: “They must do this again for the playoffs. I’ll give my utmost for Nigeria, and Inshallah, we’ll reach the FIFA World Cup.”
Appointed in January during Nigeria’s qualification struggles, Chelle inherited a team that had failed to win any of their first four matches. Under his leadership, the Super Eagles underwent a remarkable transformation, securing four victories and two draws in their last six qualifiers. This impressive run earned 14 points from 18 available, keeping Nigeria’s World Cup hopes alive after their dominant performance against Benin Republic.
The playoff journey begins with a decisive single-match encounter against Gabon. A victory would set up a subsequent clash against either Cameroon or DR Congo. Chelle emphasized the mental approach required, telling his players: “World Cup qualification isn’t war, but it demands a warrior mindset. They must channel their inner sharks.”
Nigeria seeks redemption after missing the 2022 World Cup when Ghana eliminated them on away goals in Abuja. Chelle’s focused leadership and the team’s resurgence have reignited hopes for successful qualification to the global tournament.
