Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle has cautioned the Super Eagles against complacency following their emphatic 4-1 victory over Gabon, stressing that the team must immediately shift focus to Sunday’s decisive World Cup qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Super Eagles secured their place in the final stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs with Thursday’s commanding win in Rabat. While the result delighted Nigerian supporters, Chelle emphasized that the achievement remains incomplete.
“They won against Gabon, but this means little now,” Chelle stated during his post-match briefing. “We face another crucial match in just two days. Only after Sunday’s game can we truly celebrate.”
Nigeria will return to Rabat’s Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex for Sunday’s high-stakes final. The 8pm (Nigerian time) encounter will determine which team advances to the Intercontinental playoffs.
While praising Nigeria’s attacking effectiveness against Gabon, the coach highlighted areas needing refinement. “We executed many positive actions but also made mistakes,” Chelle observed. “Certain aspects require correction before the next match. Nevertheless, I maintain full confidence in my players and their capabilities.”
