Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has dismissed swirling rumours. He addressed speculation linking him with a future move to Manchester City. Maresca firmly stated reports about him replacing Pep Guardiola are untrue.
Maresca, an Italian, previously served as Guardiola’s assistant at City. His name recently surfaced in discussions. Manchester City is planning for its long-term future. There is uncertainty about Guardiola’s tenure beyond next season.
Guardiola joined City in 2016. He has become a highly influential figure in their history. He led them to six Premier League titles. City also won the Champions League in the 2022-2023 season.

Maresca Addresses Speculation Head-On
Maresca spoke ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League match against Newcastle on Saturday. He stated, “It doesn’t affect me at all. I know it’s 100% speculation. Right now, there is no time for such discussions.”
He added, “Firstly, I have a contract here. It runs until 2029, potentially longer. My focus, as I’ve often said, is solely on this club. I am very proud to be here. This is purely speculation. A week ago, similar rumours placed me in Italy with Juventus. I do not pay attention to these stories. I know they are not true.”
Maresca concluded, “It’s important to understand why this news appeared. But it is simply speculation.”
Maresca assumed leadership at Stamford Bridge in June 2024. His contract extends until 2029, with an option for an additional year. His immediate priority is Chelsea’s strong league performance. The Blues currently sit fourth. They face Newcastle in a 1:30 p.m. kick-off on Saturday.
Clarifying Recent Comments and Future Plans
The Manchester City rumours emerged recently. This followed Maresca’s admission of his ‘worst 48 hours’ at Chelsea. He made this comment despite a 2-0 home victory against Everton last weekend.
These comments fuelled suggestions of a potential rift. It was thought to be between the manager and club leadership. This includes co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali. Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart were also mentioned.
Maresca was asked about discussing the situation with these figures. He quickly moved to alleviate concerns. “We share the same building,” he explained. “We discuss various topics. However, the Everton press conference was not one of them.”
The Chelsea boss also reassured supporters about his future. He replied “absolutely, yes” when asked about remaining in charge next season. He also directly appealed to fans. Maresca urged them to “continue to support the team.”
