Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has made a passionate appeal. He urged Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah not to reward certain political figures. These are described as ‘political bandits’ led by Chief Ugo Agbala. They are currently involved in forming new Ward and Local Government Area executives in the state.
Okechukwu’s appeal follows circulating reports. These reports suggest two of four APC slots might go to Agbala’s faction. These slots are part of a proposed nine-member Ward and LGA Executive structure.
He openly questioned the rationale behind such a move. Okechukwu asked on what “valid ground or good conscience” Mbah would justify this. He described Agbala as “a serial renegade.” According to Okechukwu, Agbala “led a political coup.” This action, he claimed, significantly hampered the APC.
The party secured only 4,722 votes in Enugu State. This was during the 2023 presidential election.
Okechukwu reminded everyone of the APC’s previous performance. In the 2019 presidential election, the party garnered over 56,000 votes. There were hopes to build on this success in 2023. This followed extensive membership mobilization efforts.
However, he stated these efforts were derailed. This happened after Agbala was reportedly imposed on the party. Okechukwu added, “the rest is history.”
Okechukwu issued a strong warning. He believes it would be dangerous to “reward” Agbala. He alleged that Agbala’s “hostile leadership style” alienated many party members. This style, Okechukwu claimed, contributed to the party’s lowest presidential vote tally nationwide.
