Strasbourg FC forward Emanuel Emegha has explained his decision to represent the Netherlands instead of Nigeria. The 22-year-old emphasized his identity as a Dutchman despite his Nigerian heritage.
Emegha made his competitive debut for the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier against Poland. He came on as an 87th-minute substitute. This appearance officially committed him to the Dutch national team.
Born in the Netherlands to a Togolese father and Nigerian mother, Emegha had received approaches from Nigerian football officials. He rejected the chance to switch allegiances. The striker firmly stated where his loyalties lie.
“The Netherlands is simply my country,” Emegha told Sportnieuws. “I’m a proud Dutchman and always will be. Even without a national call-up, I’d still be Dutch.”
Emegha is reportedly set to join Chelsea next season. His immediate focus remains on succeeding with the Dutch national team. The striker aims to secure his spot for the upcoming World Cup.
“I’ll work all season toward World Cup selection,” he stated. “That means scoring more goals, providing assists, and maintaining peak fitness. I’ve battled injuries this season. Reaching top condition is crucial.”
