An All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Abimbola Olawunmi, has accused the party of imposing incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji as its candidate for the 2027 election.
Olawunmi made these allegations during a Wednesday appearance on Arise Television, declaring he cannot support Governor Oyebanji’s candidacy.
“If the process that made Governor Oyebanji the APC candidate had been fair, I could support him,” Olawunmi stated. “However, since the process is fundamentally flawed, I cannot offer my support.”
The aspirant further claimed Ekiti residents have rejected Oyebanji. He questioned the governor’s electability given his avoidance of competitive primaries.
“The people of Ekiti State have clearly stated they won’t vote for him in the gubernatorial election,” Olawunmi said. “If he lacked confidence to contest fairly in primaries, how can he win the general election?”
Meanwhile, the APC’s Affirmation Congress Committee defended the governor’s nomination. Chairman Ahmed Ododo cited Oyebanji’s “giant strides in various sectors benefiting Ekiti people.”
Ododo added that APC remains a disciplined party that has earned public trust through Oyebanji’s leadership. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved the affirmation motion in Ado-Ekiti.
