Egypt claimed a 2-1 victory over Nigeria’s Super Eagles in an international friendly on Tuesday night. The preparatory match for AFCON 2025 took place at Cairo International Stadium on December 16.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Ahmed Saber. The Egyptian forward calmly converted Zizo’s low cross from close range.
Nigeria pressed for an equalizer before halftime. Paul Onuachu’s powerful header forced a sharp save from goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy. The Super Eagles leveled in stoppage time when Chidozie Awaziem headed home after confusion from Zaidu Sanusi’s free-kick.
Egypt regained their lead early in the second half. Mostafa Mohamed capitalized on a defensive lapse, racing clear before slotting past debutant goalkeeper Amas Obasogie.
Despite Nigeria’s efforts to find another equalizer, Egypt’s organized defense held firm. The Super Eagles introduced fresh legs but struggled to create clear chances against the disciplined hosts.
Super Eagles Preparations Continue
The friendly provided valuable match preparation for Nigeria. Midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro and goalkeeper Obasogie both made unofficial debuts. Stanley Nwabali started despite recent injury concerns.
Several key players including Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, and Moses Simon missed the fixture. Nigeria will travel to Morocco on Thursday to continue AFCON preparations.
The Super Eagles are placed in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania. Their AFCON 2025 campaign begins against Tanzania on December 23 in Fez.
