Edo State PDP’s publicity secretary Dan Osa-Ogbegie has issued a stark warning regarding FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s conduct. The party official declared Wike’s behavior poses a serious danger to Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
The criticism follows a heated confrontation where armed soldiers prevented Wike from accessing a land site in Abuja. Video footage showed the former Rivers governor angrily challenging military officers enforcing the blockade. His accompanying officials protested the restriction during the tense standoff.
PDP’s Scathing Indictment of Minister’s Conduct
In an official statement, Osa-Ogbegie condemned Wike’s actions as revealing “a deeper sickness: a man intoxicated by unrestrained authority.” The PDP highlighted particular concern about the timing. This incident occurred when Nigeria remains vulnerable to institutional instability.
The statement emphasized: “When every institution must act with restraint to preserve national stability, Wike’s arrogance in confronting a serving officer was gross irresponsibility. In our fragile democracy, such behavior is incendiary.”
Broader Political Consequences
Beyond the military confrontation, the PDP accused Wike of damaging his own political party. The statement alleged he’s strangling the PDP that gave him prominence. It claims he maintains the party in “a state of paralysis” to serve his future ambitions.
Osa-Ogbegie warned President Tinubu against indulging Wike’s conduct. “Those who feed the tiger of impunity often end up as its meal,” the statement cautioned. It characterized Wike as “political dynamite in a matchbox—noisy, combustible, and blind to consequence.”
The PDP further criticized Wike’s governance approach. Instead of demonstrating humility and service as FCT minister, he displays “hubris” and “self-worship.” This behavior erodes democratic values like dialogue and tolerance.
Call for Institutional Response
The statement concluded with a grave warning: “Wike’s conduct is an early warning sign—the kind of arrogance that has plunged nations into chaos. His recklessness could trigger tremors beyond the PDP. Unless checked, Nigeria may discover the man they indulged has become an architect of national instability.”
This condemnation follows military veterans demanding accountability for Wike’s confrontation. Others have called for formal apologies to both the military and President Tinubu.
