Edo State APC Chairman Jarrett Tenebe has declared that commissioners defying Governor Monday Okpebholo’s directive to wear the ‘Asiwaju cap’ during State Executive Council meetings risk party suspension. Tenebe emphasized this requirement serves as a crucial loyalty test to both the party and President Bola Tinubu.
“Refusing the governor’s order constitutes indiscipline and insubordination,” Tenebe told reporters. “Such defiance will result in suspension from our party.” The chairman stressed the cap-wearing mandate isn’t optional but a fundamental demonstration of commitment to APC leadership.
Tenebe directly connected the policy to Edo APC’s electoral strategy. “We’ve pledged to deliver 3.5 million votes for President Tinubu. Every member must contribute to this target,” he stated. The chairman asserted that party loyalty remains non-negotiable, particularly for political appointees who gained office through APC.
Dismissing critics of the directive, Tenebe maintained opponents don’t represent Edo APC’s interests. “True members understand this gesture affirms our loyalty to the President. Those complaining aren’t genuine party members,” he declared. “Our position remains clear: no Asiwaju cap, no Exco participation.”
The governor’s enforcement of visible loyalty symbols occurs as Edo APC consolidates structures ahead of 2027 elections. While some view the cap mandate as excessive symbolism, party leadership considers it essential for demonstrating unity and discipline under Tinubu’s national leadership.
