Dele Momodu, a prominent politician and publisher, has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive on police escorts. The President ordered ministers and senior officials to obtain approval before requesting police security for official duties.
President Tinubu clarified the new policy. He stated, “I have told the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), and I hope the Minister of Police Affairs is here to implement the directive.”
He further added, “If you have any problem with security, because of the nature of your assignment, please contact the IGP and get my clearance.”
Momodu shared his reaction on Instagram. He had previously suggested that the withdrawal of police escorts from Very Important Persons (VIPs) was a tactic. He believed it aimed to undermine political opposition. Momodu now asserts that the President’s latest order confirms his earlier suspicion.
Momodu’s Allegations on Political Motivation
He wrote, “THE CAT IS FINALLY OUT OF THE BAG… Did I not say it was politically motivated?” Momodu questioned the new approval process. He asked, “Who will now go through the rigmarole stated here?”
Momodu further inquired, “So VIPs now have to seek Presidential approval for bodyguards in order to stay alive in Nigeria?”
Momodu views the directive as a strategic move. He believes it is designed “to scare opposition leaders away from campaigning nationwide.” He concluded with a poignant reminder: “POWER is transient SIR, no matter how sweet or long…”
