Genoa manager Daniele De Rossi believes Atalanta will be significantly weakened by Ademola Lookman’s absence when the teams meet in Serie A this weekend. The Nigerian winger has joined his national team for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
De Rossi described Lookman as a decisive player capable of altering match outcomes. “If I coached Lookman, I’d always play him,” De Rossi stated. “He makes the difference in Serie A and shifts the game’s balance.”
The Genoa boss acknowledged Atalanta’s bench strength but emphasized Lookman’s unique impact. “Their substitutes are dangerous too, but his absence changes everything,” he added.
Atalanta enter Sunday’s match in 12th place with 19 points. Genoa sit 16th with 14 points, barely above relegation territory. Both clubs seek crucial points.
Though not at peak form this season, Lookman remains influential on the left flank. The 28-year-old has netted twice in 11 league appearances under coach Raffaele Palladino.
Since joining from RB Leipzig three years ago, Lookman has delivered remarkable output. He boasts 55 goals and 26 assists across 134 matches.
Lookman now joins Nigeria’s AFCON campaign. He’s expected to start in Tuesday’s Group C opener against Tanzania after starring in the 2023 final run.
