Nigerian music star D’Banj has shed light on the breakup of Mo’Hits Records. He confirmed that Don Jazzy entirely made the decision to end their partnership.
In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye, D’Banj explained the decision to part ways. He confirmed that Don Jazzy initiated this call. He added that this choice helped them maintain a positive relationship afterwards.
After the split, Don Jazzy granted D’Banj full ownership of his music catalog. This included all unreleased tracks. This gesture ensured D’Banj’s career continued smoothly. He retained complete control over his creative work.
Their collaboration’s final major hit was ‘Oliver Twist’. This song signaled the end of their partnership. D’Banj stated that ‘Oliver Twist’ served to leave a lasting mark on the global music scene. It was released just before they moved on to new ventures.
D’Banj emphasized, “The idea to go our separate ways didn’t come from me. It came entirely from Don Jazzy. That’s why we maintain a good relationship.”
He continued, “He gave me 100 percent of my catalog, even 10 unreleased songs.” For him, he added, “It’s not about the record label; it’s about the movement and future.”
He concluded, “For me personally, it was a journey. Don Jazzy had his opinions. Still, I knew we needed to cement that global movement. I’m glad that, in the end, God still made it happen for us.”
Mo’Hits Records was co-founded by D’Banj and Don Jazzy. The label played a pivotal role in shaping the Nigerian music scene. It produced numerous hit songs. Mo’Hits also helped launch the careers of prominent artists. These included Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince.
After leaving Mo’Hits, Don Jazzy founded Mavin Records. There, he nurtured new talents. Artists like Tiwa Savage, Rema, and Ayra Starr rose to fame under his guidance. This move further cemented his influence in the Nigerian music industry.
