Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former vice-presidential candidate for the Labour Party, recently made a significant claim. He asserted that he almost prevented the swearing-in of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Baba-Ahmed further noted the All Progressives Congress (APC) has not fully recovered. This, he suggested, is due to specific comments he made earlier.
During an appearance on Arise News, Baba-Ahmed voiced his disappointment. He lamented that Nigerians overlooked his initial warnings. He called upon citizens to take action for themselves. He specifically urged them not to rely on foreign powers, such as the United States, to resolve the nation’s challenges.
“I nearly stopped the swearing-in of this government,” Baba-Ahmed declared. “Even today, some elements still hold me responsible. The APC has not recovered since those few comments I made.”
He continued, “We repeatedly warned the people. They simply refused to listen. That is why we are now enduring such a high cost.”
Baba-Ahmed stressed the importance of self-reliance. “No country will do for you what you are unwilling to do for yourselves,” he explained. “Americans will not bomb you into development. Nigerians, it is time to wake up.”
Guiding Principles and Political Criticism
Sharing the values that inform his decisions, Baba-Ahmed stated, “My guiding principle is simple: I love Nigeria. I want Nigeria to succeed.”
He criticized Nigeria’s political landscape. He argued that the nation consistently allows politicians driven by personal and group interests to assume power. “Nigeria should not have leaders,” he insisted. “Their entire focus should not be re-election and personal gain.”
Baba-Ahmed also issued a strong warning regarding the next election cycle. He urged citizens to actively resist any form of electoral manipulation. “Do not allow anyone to rig the 2027 elections,” he cautioned. “They will rig, and you will mean nothing to them. The Constitution will mean nothing. One individual will interpret it exactly as he wishes.”
Focus on Education and Institutional Challenges
Shifting his focus to education, Baba-Ahmed discussed his preferred area of work. He spoke about the core values that led to the establishment of Baze University. “Education is a significant part of our family’s legacy,” he stated. “Whenever I complain about an issue, I make sure to take action about it.”
He condemned what he described as widespread disregard for regulations. This is particularly evident in the creation of new educational institutions. “Even if an education policy exists, it is being abused,” he fumed. “This government is breaking its own laws. Universities are being permitted to start operations in rented buildings. This practice is illegal.”
Baba-Ahmed further accused some regulatory bodies of attempting to undermine Baze University. “They want to challenge me,” he claimed. “They aim to dilute the quality we uphold. However, I will continue to speak the truth, regardless of the repercussions.”
