Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially dismissed a viral video claiming it launched a motorcycle-based petrol delivery service. The company labeled the widely circulated material as completely false and unrelated to its operations.
Debunking the Viral Video
The controversial clip showed a man ordering petrol via WhatsApp to avoid fuel queues. A dispatch rider then appeared to fill the customer’s vehicle at their doorstep. Branded as “FuelUp powered by Dangote Petroleum,” the video spread rapidly across Nigerian social media on Sunday.
Public Reaction and Safety Concerns
Viewers expressed mixed reactions to the footage. Some praised it as an innovative solution to fuel scarcity. Others raised alarm about the safety of transporting petrol on motorcycles. Many Nigerians questioned the video’s authenticity. They noted its artificial-looking graphics and transitions.
Official Refinery Response
Group Chief Corporate Communications Officer Anthony Chiejina expressed shock at the unauthorized use of Dangote’s branding. “We are not associated with this in any way,” Chiejina told The PUNCH. Another senior official clarified the refinery only supplies petroleum products to bulk buyers.
The company confirmed it has no motorcycle delivery partnerships. Dangote immediately flagged the video as a misrepresentation of its operations.
Actual Distribution Model
Dangote emphasized its reliance on secure large-scale logistics systems. Officials described specialized tanker trucks as fundamental to their strategy. These ensure safe and efficient nationwide fuel distribution.
The refinery stressed it doesn’t engage in direct retail sales. Doorstep deliveries via motorcycles are strictly unauthorized.
Expansion and Strategic Goals
Located in Lagos’ Lekki Free Trade Zone, Dangote Refinery is scaling production capacity. Current plans involve increasing output from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels daily. This expansion aims to meet Nigeria’s growing fuel demand.
Simultaneously, the company is upgrading technical systems and safety controls. Investments focus on cleaner energy sources and automated processing. These initiatives reinforce Dangote’s position in Africa’s energy market.
