A Nigerian citizen recently criticized a church. They observed the church employing a Point of Sale (POS) system. This system was used for collecting offerings during a worship service.
A video capturing this incident quickly gained traction. It subsequently went viral across various social media platforms.
Digital Payment System Adopted for Church Offerings
The widely circulated video depicted a church staff member. This person was assisting an elderly woman. She was making her offering payment via the POS device.
Following the successful transaction, she received a receipt. The attendant then moved to assist other congregants.
Online Community Reacts to Modern Offering Method
Many internet users voiced their disapproval. They expressed concerns over the increasing commercialization of religious institutions. Some suggested churches are now operating more like businesses.
One user, @nightprogram_, stated: “Church is essentially a business venture. True devotion resides within one’s heart.”
Another commenter, @Da__preye, remarked: “Jesus must be weary of certain church practices.”
@kenny_pablo offered a different perspective. They highlighted the biblical basis for tithe payments. They also noted the prevalence of cashless transactions today. Many individuals no longer carry physical cash. POS machines are common, even at social gatherings. They concluded that church attendance is voluntary. No one faces compulsion to participate if they disagree.
@dele003 mentioned this practice is not new. He emphasized that contributions remain voluntary.
The controversial event was documented in a video. You can view the footage below.
