Reverend Father Prince Chidi Philip has sharply criticized Governor Hyacinth Alia. He accused the governor of abandoning his priestly moral obligations. Philip further claimed Alia downplays Benue state’s severe humanitarian crisis.
This statement followed Governor Alia’s recent assertion. He acknowledged insecurity, but denied any Christian persecution in Benue.
Priest Critiques Governor’s Leadership
Father Philip condemned the governor’s detachment from the Church. He said this occurred after Alia entered political office. Philip argued that spiritual duties from ordination endure. This is true despite no longer being formally associated with the priesthood. Benue residents expected honesty and moral leadership from Alia. He once pledged to defend the vulnerable.
The cleric also denounced Governor Alia’s recent insistence. Alia stated there was no religiously motivated violence in Benue. Philip called this a denial of extensive suffering. Communities face killings, displacement, and property destruction. The governor’s stance contradicts reality. Villages are overrun by attackers, churches are destroyed, and civilians are harmed.
According to Father Philip, the governor chose political convenience. He prioritized his administration’s image. This came at the expense of protecting his people. This move departs from expected principles. Such principles guide anyone who once preached justice and empathy.
Philip also restated the Church’s stance. It bars priests from holding political office. This decision is well-founded. Politics often demands compromise. Priesthood, however, is rooted in truth. Blending these roles, he contended, invariably compromises moral integrity.
Governor Accused of Undermining Crisis Severity
Father Philip expressed profound sorrow. The governor, once a spiritual guide, now aligns with those minimizing the crisis. History, he added, will mark this as a failure. It will remember a leader who did not defend his people.
The priest implored Governor Alia to rethink his position. He urged him to speak honestly about Benue’s situation. Philip insisted that seeking reelection should not jeopardize lives. It must not compromise the dignity of state residents.
