The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially expanded the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to 16 teams for its 2026 edition. This historic decision will take effect during the tournament scheduled to be hosted by Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
This format change aligns with CAF’s strategy to create more opportunities for women’s teams across Africa. The expansion aims to promote inclusivity and increase continental exposure for women’s football.
Selection Process for Additional Teams
Since qualification rounds were already completed before the expansion decision, CAF used FIFA Women’s World Rankings to select the four additional teams. Cameroon (66th globally), Côte d’Ivoire (71st), Mali (79th), and Egypt (95th) secured their spots through this method.
Complete Tournament Lineup
These nations will join the 12 teams that previously qualified for the competition. The full roster now includes:
- Host nation Morocco
- Zambia
- Tanzania
- Malawi
- Algeria
- Nigeria
- Ghana
- Burkina Faso
- Kenya
- Cape Verde
- South Africa
- Senegal
Impact on African Women’s Football
CAF believes the expanded format will significantly enhance competitiveness. It also boosts global visibility for African women’s football. More teams gain valuable tournament experience through this format.
The 2026 WAFCON carries additional importance. It will serve as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. This expanded championship marks another milestone in the growth of women’s football across the continent.
