Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy has openly shared his perspective on living abroad, revealing he doesn’t experience complete freedom in the United States. During a recent interview with streamer Playboymax, the Afrobeats superstar expressed these heartfelt sentiments about his life overseas.
Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu, acknowledged certain appealing aspects of American life. However, he emphasized a persistent sense of discomfort during his time there. The musician clarified that only Nigeria provides him with true liberation.
The acclaimed performer contrasted the American experience with life in his homeland. He described Nigeria as his sanctuary of authenticity. There, he moves without constant restrictions. He feels empowered to be his genuine self without apprehension.
Burna Boy stated: “I like freedom, and the definition of freedom is in my country. I can never be fully free here, if I could though. ’Cause nggs go to jail, like all the best nggs I know go to jail, and I know that’s not what I’m trying to do.”
While recognizing America’s opportunities, Burna Boy highlighted what he sees as limitations. He misses Nigeria’s unique feeling of ease and cultural connection. His comments reveal a deeper reflection on belonging and identity.
