Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Bode George has strongly criticized factions within the party, denouncing what he called “selfishness” and “existential imbecility” ahead of the national convention in Ibadan. During an Arise News interview, George dismissed calls to suspend the convention or install a caretaker committee.
Democratic Processes Must Prevail
George firmly opposed recent suggestions to delay the convention. He insisted the party’s internal democratic mechanisms must be respected. “The main party remains solidly intact,” George declared. He confirmed most National Working Committee members support proceeding as planned.
The elder statesman specifically countered Senator Bukola Saraki’s proposal for a caretaker committee. “I totally disagree with him,” George stated. He referenced Saraki’s previous reconciliation efforts that yielded no results.
Condemning Reckless Behavior
George expressed dismay at factional actions, saying they dishonor PDP’s founders. “The founding fathers would be shaking in their graves,” he remarked. He particularly criticized National Secretary Samuel Ayo for allegedly announcing a false convention postponement.
“Only three of nineteen NWC members support this faction,” George revealed. He described the situation using biblical analogy: “You hear the voice of Jacob, but the hand of Esau.”
Historical Warnings and Unity Calls
George recalled Nigeria’s political history to warn against disunity. He referenced Western Region crises from the 1960s. “Don’t repeat past mistakes,” he urged. The PDP leader issued a blunt message to dissenters: “If you want to leave the party, get the hell out.”
He maintained that courts shouldn’t interfere in internal party matters. “The Supreme Court has ruled parties must resolve internal disputes themselves,” George emphasized.
Broader Societal Concerns
Beyond party politics, George condemned tribalism and religious divisions. He traced these issues to colonial legacy. “Love your neighbor as yourself – it’s in both Bible and Quran,” he stated.
Despite current tensions, George expressed optimism about PDP’s resilience. “We’re awaiting the court ruling and proceeding to convention,” he concluded. The party veteran believes democratic processes will ultimately strengthen unity.
