In a significant political shift, supporters of former Sokoto State governor Attahiru Bafarawa have formally abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The group, operating as the Bafarawa Akida Movement, has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto.
Movement Chairman Explains Defection Decision
Professor Hamza Maishanu, chairman of the movement, confirmed the decision followed state-wide consultations. He stated members collectively chose to leave PDP and align with APC.
“After careful review of the political landscape, our elders resolved to switch allegiance,” Maishanu explained. He cited Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s governance performance as key motivation.
The cordial relationship between Governor Aliyu and Bafarawa also influenced the move. Members believed this alignment served their best interests.
Maishanu dismissed speculation linking the defection to 2027 elections. He stressed the decision resulted from internal deliberation, not external pressure.
“Our move to APC is formal and intentional,” he stated. The group will complete all necessary defection procedures through further consultations.
Bafarawa’s Stance on Political Involvement
Meanwhile, Attahiru Bafarawa clarified he remains retired from active politics. He hasn’t personally joined APC despite his supporters’ defection.
The former governor endorsed his followers’ decision however. He emphasized their right to make political choices aligned with their interests.
