Former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa has dismissed circulating reports about his alleged return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), labeling the claims as entirely false and misleading.
In a definitive statement, Bafarawa denied any association with the ruling party. He clarified, “I have not joined APC and have no intention of joining any political party.” This position follows his formal resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on January 8, 2025.
Focus on Youth Empowerment
Bafarawa explained his political exit stems from a commitment to humanitarian work. “My decision was informed by dedication to youth empowerment,” he stated. The former governor aims to create programs inspiring young Nigerians, whom he considers crucial for national development.
“To avoid conflicts of interest, I withdrew from all political affiliations,” Bafarawa added. He emphasized this position remains unchanged. His focus remains on fostering innovation and building prosperous futures through non-partisan initiatives.
Supporters’ Political Choices
Bafarawa suggested rumors may originate from his supporters joining APC. “My former associates retain freedom of political association,” he clarified. He supports their alignment with Sokoto Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto’s administration.
“Their support for the governor’s security efforts promotes peace,” Bafarawa noted. “As a peace advocate, I endorse such moves.” However, he reiterated this doesn’t reflect his personal political stance.
Historical APC Connection
The former governor acknowledged his past role in APC’s formation. “I was a founding member but left early due to irreconcilable differences,” he revealed. Bafarawa finds current association claims laughable since he never attends APC meetings.
After leaving APC during its formative stage in 2013, Bafarawa returned to PDP before exiting partisan politics entirely in 2025. His latest statement aims to quell speculation about potential political alignments ahead of 2027 elections.
