Afrobeats superstar, Ayra Starr, has openly discussed the significant challenges she faces. She recently relocated to the United States. The singer has faced considerable difficulties since her move to New York.
Ayra Starr shared these struggles in a recent Substack post. It was titled “I’m not scared, I promise.” The ‘Rush’ crooner moved from Lagos to New York. This followed a major management deal with Roc Nation. She reflected on loneliness, harsh weather conditions, and moments of self-doubt.
She described her new environment in vivid terms. Her apartment in New York feels “almost empty.” Ayra Starr strikingly likened the entire city to “a walk-in freezer.”
The extreme cold has been mentally draining for her. It occasionally makes her question her decision to relocate. She elaborated on its intensity in her post.
“It’s so cold it feels like the city is actively trying to unalive my motivation,” she wrote. Ayra Starr added, “It’s the kind of cold that makes you realise happiness was just a summer hallucination.”
The singer admits to sometimes struggling with regret. She noted she would typically be enjoying Nigeria’s festive “Detty December” season. This would be with friends and fellow citizens. Instead, she endures solitude in New York.
Despite these hardships, Ayra Starr views her move positively. She described it as a “rebellious risk.” This choice, she explained, was made for her career advancement.
This experience has also ushered her into a new personal phase. She terms it her “nobody gets me era.” In this new state, she no longer feels pressured to constantly prove herself to others.
