Afrobeats sensation, Ayra Starr, has openly shared the difficulties she faces since moving to the United States.
In a recent Substack post titled ‘I’m not scared, I promise,’ the ‘Rush’ crooner detailed her struggles. Ayra Starr recently relocated from Lagos to New York. This move followed a management deal with Roc Nation. She reflected on loneliness, harsh weather, and moments of doubt.
She described her new apartment as ‘almost empty’. Ayra Starr likened New York’s atmosphere to ‘a walk-in freezer’.
The intense cold, she explained, has been mentally draining. It sometimes makes her question her decision to relocate.
Ayra Starr wrote about the severe chill. “It’s so cold it feels like the city is actively trying to unalive my motivation,” she stated. She added, “It’s the kind of cold that makes you realise happiness was just a summer hallucination.”
The singer admitted to moments of regret. She noted that she would typically be enjoying Nigeria’s festive ‘Detty December’ season. Instead, she is dealing with solitude in New York, away from friends and fellow citizens.
Despite these challenges, Ayra Starr called her move a ‘rebellious risk’. She took this risk for her music career.
She explained that this experience has brought her into a ‘nobody gets me era’. Ayra Starr now feels less pressure. She no longer needs to constantly prove herself to others.
