Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently visited ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. This meeting generated significant interest across political circles. Atiku himself posted photos online, noting his pleasure in “catching up” with Jonathan after his return from Guinea-Bissau.
However, Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media aide, quickly clarified the nature of the visit to Daily Trust. He stated firmly that the interaction carried no political undertones. Ibe explained the visit was a simple welfare check. It followed the difficult situation Jonathan faced in Guinea-Bissau during their recent election. “The former Vice President visited former President Jonathan because of what happened there,” Ibe stated. “They had not met since. He felt it was necessary to check up on him. There is nothing political about the meeting.”
Ikechukwu Eze, spokesperson for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, also confirmed he was not privy to the specifics of their discussion. The visit specifically referenced Jonathan’s challenging experience in Guinea-Bissau. He was among several African leaders stranded there on November 26. This occurred after a coup attempt shook the West African nation. Jonathan was part of a joint mission. This mission included the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum. Their purpose was to monitor the country’s presidential election.
