Lionel Messi firmly believes Argentina will successfully defend their FIFA World Cup title in 2026. The Albiceleste captain expects to lead the defending champions in the tournament, set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Messi inspired his country to a historic triumph in Qatar in 2022, lifting the World Cup for the third time in Argentina’s history.
Speaking to TouchlineX, Messi made his team’s ambition clear. When asked if Argentina could retain the title, Messi responded confidently: “Yes,” he stated. “I believe this is a group that will try to win the World Cup again. We will give everything and fight.”
Argentina has already secured qualification for the 2026 finals. They will enter the competition as a strong favorite, featuring a robust core of players built around Messi, who now plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
Messi Praises Pep Guardiola
Meanwhile, ESPN Argentina recently released a preview offering a glimpse into Messi’s upcoming exclusive interview. In it, the forward spoke warmly about his former coach, Pep Guardiola, under whom he enjoyed some of his finest years at Barcelona.
Messi stated his high regard for Guardiola. “In my opinion, Pep Guardiola is unique,” he said. “Many coaches are very good, but he has something different. For me, he is the best among all coaches.”
The former PSG star commented on Guardiola’s thoroughness. “He is extremely comprehensive,” Messi explained. “This applies to observing things and preparing for matches. He excels at communicating information to players.” Messi highlighted their time at Barcelona: “He is the best,” he affirmed. “We were fortunate to have him. He worked seamlessly with our players then. All elements aligned perfectly to achieve our accomplishments.”
Messi further praised Guardiola’s impact beyond trophies, highlighting his influence on playing styles across Europe. “He went elsewhere and continued to win,” Messi noted. “This was not just because of victories. It was also because of the way his teams played.” Messi cited examples: “While at Bayern, he changed German football. This happened even without winning the Champions League. Similarly in England, he led Manchester City. He changed how the league was played.”
