The leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has signaled a strong political alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The party’s National Executive Council (NEC) may soon formally endorse him for the 2027 general elections.
APGA National Chairman, Barrister Sylvester Ezeokenwa, announced this during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. He emphasized that APGA stands as Nigeria’s only major progressive party. Its philosophy, he added, aligns closely with President Tinubu’s style of administration.
APGA’s Alignment with Tinubu’s Administration
Ezeokenwa highlighted APGA’s long-standing tradition. The party traditionally supports central governments that implement good governance. This practice, he noted, has been demonstrated by past and current APGA governors in Anambra State.
“Our party has a history of working with a progressive central government,” he stated. “Governor Soludo of Anambra is currently demonstrating this principle.”
APGA’s primary focus, Ezeokenwa explained, is delivering good governance. He stressed it is not merely about participating in elections. He also referenced President Tinubu’s recent visit to Anambra State. During this visit, the President wore an APGA insignia. This gesture, Ezeokenwa suggested, underscored the “progressive nature shared by the two leaders.”
“Mr. President wore our insignia during his Anambra visit,” Ezeokenwa recounted. “He did this without bias. We are therefore quite in support of him.”
Governor Soludo’s Loyalty: Defection Rumors Debunked
Addressing persistent rumors, Ezeokenwa strongly denied claims about Anambra State Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo. Many believed Soludo was planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Professor Soludo is going nowhere,” he affirmed unequivocally. “I can state clearly that the Anambra State Governor, as our party leader, never nursed such an ambition.”
Call for National Security Reform
The National Chairman also weighed in on national security matters. He criticized the current security setup. He strongly advocated for significant reforms.
He specifically criticized Nigeria’s overly centralized security architecture. Ezeokenwa argued that no country with a federal system operates in such a manner. He stressed his leadership’s consistent support for decentralization.
Celebrating Bianca Ojukwu’s Ministerial Appointment
Barrister Ezeokenwa also expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s leadership. He specifically praised the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as a Minister. He highlighted this as a significant milestone for APGA.
“She is the best Minister in this administration,” he declared confidently. “I challenge anyone to dispute this. This marks the first time our party has produced a Minister, despite not being the President’s party.”
APGA’s Electoral Success in Anambra
Ezeokenwa attributed APGA’s strong performance in the last Anambra gubernatorial election to Governor Soludo’s accomplishments. Soludo, he noted, effectively delivered democracy dividends. He dismissed opposition criticism as mere “rants of misguided individuals.”
The party secured an “overwhelming victory,” Ezeokenwa added. They won all but seven local government areas. This outcome, he concluded, serves as clear proof of APGA’s popularity and impact in the state.
