The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has not finalized plans for zoning its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections. State Chairman Sunday Fagbemi clarified this position during a Friday radio interview.
Fagbemi explained that zoning decisions ultimately rest with the party’s national leadership. He stated, “Any zoning arrangement must come from the national executive. Currently, no such discussion is underway at the state level.”
The chairman emphasized that potential candidates retain their right to pursue office. He added, “We haven’t established an election schedule yet. Anyone interested in contesting remains free to do so.”
Fagbemi noted that state-level zoning decisions require national ratification. “Even if Kwara chapter proposes a zoning formula, it must receive approval from Abuja,” he stressed.
These statements follow renewed appeals from Kwara North stakeholders for the governorship ticket. The district has not produced a governor since Nigeria’s democratic return in 1999.
The zoning debate dominates political discussions in Kwara. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq will complete his constitutionally-limited second term in 2027. This ensures an open contest for his succession.
