Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has not formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) two weeks after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Senior APC officials reveal this delay stems from his request for a ceremonial reception.
Ceremonial Request Causes Postponement
A top APC national secretariat official disclosed that Governor Diri specifically asked Vice President Kashim Shettima to present him with the party flag during an official welcome event. This request necessitated extended preparations.
“Governor Diri will join the APC on Monday,” the official confirmed. “He desires a formal reception where the Vice President hands him our party’s flag. Both our secretariat and the VP’s office have finalized arrangements.”
The official emphasized the governor merits a distinguished welcome. This explains the two-week gap since his PDP resignation.
Monday Defection Confirmed
Another APC administrative officer verified preparations for Monday’s event. “We’re ready to receive Governor Diri at our secretariat. His wish for an official ceremony will be honored.”
The officer affirmed Diri’s commitment remains firm. “His APC defection proceeds as planned. Nothing will alter this course.” The governor had resigned from PDP alongside the state assembly speaker and deputy speaker.
