The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially endorsed Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji as its consensus candidate for the 2026 governorship election. The party’s affirmation came after a committee led by Ahmed Ododo declared Oyebanji’s selection reflects his administration’s significant achievements across various sectors benefiting Ekiti residents.
Committee Chairman Ododo emphasized that the APC maintains party discipline and has earned public trust through Oyebanji’s leadership approach. The endorsement positions the incumbent governor as the party’s preferred candidate nearly two years before the scheduled election.
Protests Precede Official Endorsement
This affirmation follows recent demonstrations at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja. Party members from Ekiti State, primarily women, protested the disqualification of businessman Kayode Ojo from the governorship primary. Carrying placards with messages like “We Say No to Kayode Ojo’s Disqualification” and “Ekiti Women Reject BAO,” they rejected the consensus approach.
Protesters chanted slogans opposing Governor Oyebanji’s candidacy while voicing support for Ojo. Their placards also bore inscriptions such as “We Don’t Want Consensus” and “APC Must Let Ekiti People Choose Their Candidate,” highlighting internal party divisions over the selection process.
