Nigerian-born British heavyweight Anthony Joshua believes his anticipated showdown with Tyson Fury is now closer to reality than ever before. The former unified world champion declared that Fury has exhausted all excuses and must finally face him in the ring.
“This fight is very possible now,” Joshua told Marca. “In fact, it’s more likely than at any point. Fury simply has no other options left. He must fight me.”
This bold statement follows recent comments from Fury’s promoter Frank Warren. Warren revealed the former WBC champion prefers a third fight with Oleksandr Usyk over the British rivalry clash fans demand.
“Tyson really wants another bout with Usyk,” Warren told Sky Sports in October. That desire comes after Fury suffered consecutive points losses to the Ukrainian boxer. These remain the only defeats on his professional record.
For years, the Joshua-Fury rivalry has simmered without resolution. Multiple negotiation attempts collapsed previously. This left supporters frustrated as both fighters pursued separate career paths.
Now aged 35, Joshua sees this as his final opportunity to reclaim heavyweight supremacy. He aims to match Muhammad Ali’s achievement of becoming a three-time world champion. The British-Nigerian boxer views Fury as essential to fulfilling this ambition.
“I’ve consistently said this fight isn’t about ‘if’, but ‘when’,” Joshua emphasized. His words suggest boxing’s most anticipated British rivalry might finally reach its climax.
