Nigerian-British boxing star Anthony Joshua is reportedly in advanced negotiations for a high-stakes December bout against YouTube sensation Jake Paul, with the former world champion potentially earning £70 million from the Miami showdown.
The total fight purse is estimated at nearly £140 million, to be split evenly between both fighters. Despite the rapid progress in talks, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn cautioned that the deal remains unconfirmed, stating the financial opportunity was too significant to overlook.
“Discussions are ongoing but nothing is finalized,” Hearn told Daily Mail Sport. “This represents about fifty times more than Joshua’s alternative options. While I question Paul’s wisdom in accepting, we’re seriously exploring this.”
High-Profile Professional Bout
The proposed match would mark Joshua’s first fight since his 2023 defeat to Daniel Dubois. Unlike typical celebrity exhibitions, this would be a fully sanctioned professional contest under Queensbury rules. Netflix is positioning to broadcast the event, capitalizing on the streaming giant’s growing sports ambitions after Paul’s bout with Mike Tyson drew 60 million viewers.
Timing and Fighter Backgrounds
Paul’s recently cancelled match against Gervonta Davis opened the door for this potential matchup. The American holds a 12-1 record built primarily against aging veterans and less experienced opponents, with his sole loss coming against Tommy Fury. Boxing promoter Frank Warren anticipates massive audience interest despite criticism: “People enjoy spectacle. Joshua lacks US recognition while Paul generates buzz – it will draw huge numbers.”
Joshua’s Comeback Motivation
Beyond the financial incentive, Joshua sees the bout as critical preparation for his competitive return after elbow surgery earlier this year. The former heavyweight champion has intensified training since October following a prolonged period of inactivity.
