John Nwosu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, has strongly accused the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He alleges widespread vote buying occurred during Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Anambra State.
Nwosu made this accusation after casting his vote. He was at Oduda Central School, Ward 2, in Nnewi North Local Government Area. He arrived at the polling unit about 11:28 a.m. Voting then took place shortly after his arrival.
Speaking to journalists, Nwosu noted his satisfaction with voter turnout. However, he sharply criticised what he termed rampant financial inducement. He linked this practice directly to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s party.
He did not offer specific figures for these alleged transactions. Yet, he maintained that the practice was widespread. Nwosu warned it gravely threatened the entire electoral process’s integrity.
Labour Party Candidate Expresses Similar Concerns
The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, George Moghalu, also voiced strong concerns. He spoke about the election’s increasing monetisation. Moghalu stated he had received multiple reports of vote buying. These reports came from various parts of Anambra State.
Moghalu spoke from his residence in Nnewi North LGA. He noted that this trend has grown more aggressive. It surpasses what was observed in previous elections.
Moghalu deeply lamented the practice’s persistence. He described the situation as “scandalous and very embarrassing.” He added, “The issue of vote-buying is no more a speculation.” Moghalu further stated, “It happened very aggressively in the last by-election. This time around, I’ve been receiving reports of the same thing happening.”
