The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended David Effiong. He was a masquerade seen on public streets. This occurred shortly after the governor’s recent prohibition on such displays.
Effiong now faces legal proceedings. He is accused of violating the state’s updated regulations.

Governor’s Edict Leads to Swift Enforcement
Governor Umo Eno had recently implemented a strict statewide ban. This policy prohibited masquerades from parading on public thoroughfares. He warned that violators would face arrest and prosecution.
The governor highlighted several issues. Masquerades often used fear tactics. They intimidated citizens and extorted money. These actions were central to the new directive.
Acting on this official directive, Akwa Ibom State Police moved quickly. They detained Effiong. He was seen causing public disturbance while dressed in traditional masquerade attire.
Police officials confirmed that the suspect will be formally charged in court.
An official statement reiterated the situation: “Akwa Ibom Police detained David Effiong. He was found in full masquerade attire. This directly contravenes the governor’s order. He is slated for court appearance.”
