Nigerian football stalwart Ahmed Musa has officially retired from international football, concluding a remarkable 15-year journey with the Super Eagles that solidified his legacy in Nigerian sports history.
The 33-year-old announced his decision via Instagram, describing his time representing Nigeria as a journey marked by loyalty and landmark achievements. “After careful consideration, I’m retiring from international football,” Musa stated. “This ends nearly 15 years with the Super Eagles.”
Musa emphasized the profound meaning of wearing Nigeria’s colors: “From my first call-up, the green and white jersey meant everything to me.” He recalled his early career when he simultaneously served on Nigeria’s U-20, U-23, and senior squads. “I was just a young boy starting out,” Musa reflected. “Always traveling between teams, yet never hesitating when Nigeria called.”
His unwavering commitment earned him a national record 111 caps. “Representing Nigeria 111 times is my deepest honor,” Musa said. “Becoming our most-capped player brought both pride and responsibility with every match.”
Musa highlighted Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph as a career pinnacle. “Winning AFCON 2013 stands out forever,” he noted. “That squad exemplified true Nigerian football spirit.”
The forward made World Cup history as Nigeria’s top scorer on the global stage. He netted twice against Argentina in 2014 and repeated the feat against Iceland in 2018 – the only Nigerian to score multiple goals in World Cup matches. “Scoring those World Cup goals created unforgettable memories,” Musa shared. “I’m profoundly grateful to be Nigeria’s leading World Cup scorer.”
Musa expressed appreciation for teammates, coaches, staff, administrators, and Nigerian supporters worldwide. “I retire peacefully and gratefully,” he affirmed. “I gave my all. The Super Eagles will soar higher. Our bond remains unbroken – once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”
Musa continues his football involvement at club level, serving as general manager for Nigeria Premier League champions Kano Pillars, where he returned for his third stint in October 2024.
